5 Important Facts about Asbestos that You Should Know

Although you may not always see it, asbestos is still present in many old houses and buildings. It is important to be informed and take proper precautions to prevent this deadly material from harming you.

As you might know, the Australian government has banned the production and use of asbestos. Considering the fact that asbestos can lead to severe health issues, this is a great move. But still, you and your loved ones are not completely free from its harmful effects which can even lead to a rare form of cancer. Asbestos air monitoring is the primary way of detecting and removing any asbestos that might be present in your preemies. Read on to know five important facts about asbestos.

Many Products Still Legally Contain Asbestos

These products are mainly used in the construction industry and can exist in new structures. Asbestos is used in the manufacture of heat resistant products. Asbestos is commonly used as a sound and heat insulating material, as well as in building and fire protection materials. It is also sprayed on structural steel beams, crawl spaces and between walls. Today, products such as shingles, soundproof plaster, electrical insulation, adhesives, chalkboards, fire blankets, and thermal paper products include asbestos.

Asbestos is Only Dangerous when The Fibers become Airborne

If it is easy to crush a material containing asbestos by hand, the material is called brittle. Brittle asbestos can spread into the air and then enter your lungs when you breathe, causing illness. Brittle substances include fibrous and fluffy aerosol materials that are used for insulation, fire protection, and sound insulation. Non-brittle materials, such as floor tiles and roofing mats, generally do not emit fibers into the air. The danger to you comes from drilling, cutting, sanding, or tampering with materials that contain asbestos. If you want to renovate the house, make sure your licensed professionals work to certain specifications and safety standards. Do not try to dispose of asbestos yourself.

Symptoms May Take Decades to Show Up

Asbestos is a carcinogen and people who breathe in its microscopic fibers can cause one or more diseases. Some common asbestos-related diseases are asbestososis and mesothelioma. The longer the exposure, the greater the risk of asbestos-related diseases. Asbestos disease is a non-cancerous disease, but it is a chronic, usually fatal respiratory disease that occurs after asbestos fibers cause lung scars. Scars can cause pain, shortness of breath, and heart problems.

Mesothelioma is a rare cancer. Approximately 3,000 Americans are diagnosed with this cancer each year. It can cause the tumor to spread to the lungs and surrounding tissues. Exposure to asbestos is the cause of almost all cases of mesothelioma. These diseases can take up to 40 or 50 years to develop in the body, leaving many victims of these diseases unaware of their condition.

Asbestos Fibers Remain in the Human Body

Unlike many toxins, asbestos cannot be “flushed out.” Because asbestos fibers are microscopic, they can pass through the natural filtration system of the lungs and penetrate through the membrane that covers the lungs and covers the chest cavity. Fiber can also be swallowed and penetrate the stomach. Unfortunately, due to its needle-sharp nature, fibers cannot be removed from the body. To protect yourself, wear appropriate respiratory protection equipment and necessary personal protective equipment when you come in contact with asbestos.

Asbestos is still Mined and Exported to Other Countries

Despite its health hazards, asbestos remains a staple in countries such as Greece, Canada, Russia, Italy, China, and India. Many of these countries also continue to use and sell asbestos extensively. As asbestos is a cheap substance, it has become common on construction sites in developing countries.

These are some of the facts you need to know to help protect you and your loved ones from the health hazards of asbestos. Asbestos air monitoring is the primary method of inspecting and getting rid of any asbestos present in your premises. However, always connect with professionals dealing with asbestos to prevent any hazards of DIY.
