Overview of Hair Loss: Causes & Treatments

Hair Loss is the phase when a person starts losing hair slowly, and due to the absence of proper care & treatment, it leads to baldness. It can be temporary with a sudden change in lifestyle & place and may be permanent due to aging, heredity, hormonal changes & medical conditions. Hair loss is also known as ‘alopecia.’

It affects the scalp and other areas of the body, such as nose hair, beard, eyelash, eyebrows, and pubic hair. In conditions like alopecia areata, people lose significant hair all over the body.

The reason behind hair loss can be too subjective, and it depends upon many factors. It is always advisable to reach out to a doctor before using any new diagnosis & treatments. Some of the symptoms of hair loss are:-

  • Gradual receding of hair on the forehead, men, and women witness this in the areas of the hairline
  • Small circular bald spots and patchy hair loss among eyebrows & beard
  • During bathing, there is too much detachment of hair
  • Before sudden hair loss, a sensation of burning or stinging
  • Redness, swelling, and itchy scalp

Hair loss can be of the following types:-

Involutional Alopecia

With aging, involutional alopecia develops on the head causing hair fall. Our hair follicles go into the resting phase after a certain age resulting in the fall of hair, thinning, and shortening of its length. Here, due to the shortening of the growth cycle stage anagen, hair follicles start shrinking, leading to hair loss.

Androgenic Alopecia

This alopecia occurs due to genetic conditions among men and women. In men, it is known to be a male pattern of baldness that may have started from the early 20s as receding hairlines and falling off hair from the frontal & crown scalp. For women, this is female pattern baldness which occurs after the 40s, and they experience thinning of hair on most of their scalp.

Alopecia Areata

Under this alopecia areata condition, patchy hair loss starts abruptly all over the scalp, and maximum hair slowly falls off the head, making the person bald. However, the hair regrows within a few years in most cases.

Alopecia Universalis

This is the advanced condition of alopecia areata. It can cause hair loss from all body parts, such as eyebrows, eyelashes, hands & legs, and pubic hair.

Trichotillomania

This is one of the psychological conditions among children where they pull out their hair due to irritation and disorder.

Telogen Effluvium

This alopecia condition is temporary, where hair thinning gradually starts due to changes in the growth cycle. Hair shedding happens due to the resting phase of growing hairs.

Scarring Alopecias

This hair loss results from inflammatory skin problems like acne, cellulitis, and folliculitis. Other factors are some skin disorders such as lichen planus and lupus. These skin conditions make the surface rough, and with scars, there is no regrowth of hair, leading to permanent hair loss.

Under the guidance of doctors & experts, these surgeries are performed where a part of the hair is placed on the bald spot. Two of the methods followed by the doctors are (FUE) follicular unit extraction & (FUSS) follicular unit strip surgery. There are certain risks and conditions involved. It is advisable to understand the procedures and aftereffects on hair and consult a dermatologist.

Laser Therapy

Under this low-light laser therapy, hair cells & follicles stimulate and charge through laser treatment. Laser therapies are non-surgical hair treatments that are approved under FDA, i.e., Food and Drug Administration. It treats hair loss in men & women that occurs due to chemotherapy, post-pregnancy & menopause, and heredity hair conditions. Therapies can be costlier and involve some risks & side effects. Try to consult your doctor or dermatologist beforehand whenever going for therapies.

Possible Causes of Hair Loss

Level of Hormones

With hormonal imbalances, hair loss can happen in the body that can be further cured by a proper healthy diet, supplements, and medication for some conditions.

Genetic Conditions

If there is a hair loss condition in the family history, this can be one of the reasons for hair shedding. Consult any doctor and adapt herbal shampoos & conditioners to reduce the effect.

Stress Level

High levels of stress can be the reason for hair loss conditions like Telogen effluvium, Alopecia areata, and Trichotillomania. It can be controlled by reducing stress levels which can bring back hair growth.

Drugs

The use of drugs can disrupt keratin production, which plays an essential role in hair growth, causing hair shedding and hair loss in the body.

Injuries and Burns

Due to accidental injuries and burning, people lose patches of hair that can grow back after healing wounds.

Diet
